The Third Trimester

Before we go very far, I want to thank Abby, DJ, Tim, Donna, Steve, and Bob for leading worship last week. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to return from Nebraska last Saturday due to wind and subsequent road closures. We spent the night with friends and colleagues who graciously fed us and gave us a place to sleep. I’m sure there is a sermon in that story somewhere, I just can’t put my finger on it.

Abby and DJ enthusiastically took the lead and rumor has it was a wonderful worship service.

As my energy and focus has shifted to this week’s worship service, I found myself caught on the concept of preparation. For if we were anticipating an infant birth in less than 30 days, there are distinct steps being taken. Nesting would be in full swing. Having bags packed and a car seat ready would be top priorities. And, work for now and the upcoming season would be getting pounded out to minimize loose ends.

Do you often ponder concepts like hope and love when preparing for someone’s arrival?

Much of pregnancy is challenging, a woman is growing a whole new person inside her. And yet, one of the more hope driven concepts of pregnancy is the preparation of love. It isn’t unusual to talk to the expectant parents and hear them express, “I haven’t even met them yet, but I love them so much.” Or, “I can’t wait to meet them!”

Children do it too, both with siblings and anticipatory pets. Before the arrival of the new family member, parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors all begin to craft space in their heart for love for the person (or pet) they are anticipating welcoming into this world.

Have you? Have you let yourself fall in love with the idea of God’s presence here on earth? Have you let yourself fall in love with God wanting to understand you better by personally experiencing laughter and tears, hurt and forgiveness, love and betrayal? Have you let yourself prepare your heart and life to receive love unconditional and without bounds? Have you?

As we prepare our hearts, minds, and lives for the arrival of Emmanuel, I invite you to carve out space and time from the shopping, decorating, and baking to let love into your heart. Prepare yourself to receive love and respond with love.

Peace,
Rev Elizabeth
